Sunday 8 October – We greet Crete.

We bade farewell to Cyprus this morning – we left our little home in Kalavasos and drove just 40km along the freeway to Larnaca Airport, returned our little Nissan and boarded a flight to Athens, then after a two-hour stopover took off for Heraklion, Crete.  Our apartment here is in a perfect location, with a spectacular view across the harbour, a Venetian fortress and the ocean and within the old town.  We sought directions to the nearest supermarket from our host, Kostas, however unfortunately he omitted to mention that it does not open on Sundays as we were soon to find out.  So we continued walking into the centre of the old town, encountering many, many people either just strolling around or eating at the many open-air restaurants on the square. We managed to find a bakery to purchase our dinner, then made our way slowly back to the apartment.

So, an uneventful day, mostly spent travelling, but tomorrow we will start exploring Crete in earnest.
